Detroit's young people are among the most resilient in America. They are also among the most underserved. At R.E.E.L. Life Initiative, we use fishing and outdoor recreation as a vehicle for mentorship, youth development, and pathways to skilled trades careers — completely free to every participant. The Detroit Youth Reality

These are not statistics from another city. This is the daily reality of the young people in our community:

• 35% of Detroit children live below the federal poverty line — more than double the national average of 16%

• 1 in 3 young Americans will grow up without a mentor — in Detroit, that shortage is even more severe

• Detroit's high school graduation rate is approximately 72% — 14 points below the national average of 86%

• Detroit's violent crime rate is 4 to 5 times the national average — the daily environment our youth navigate

• Only 14% of Detroit 8th graders test proficient in reading — one of the lowest rates among major U.S. cities (NAEP 2022)

• Urban youth spend 93% less time outdoors than prior generations — disconnected from nature and its proven mental health benefits

• Michigan has 200,000+ skilled trades jobs unfilled — careers paying $55,000 to $85,000 per year that Detroit youth rarely hear about

Why Mentorship Changes Everything

The research from MENTOR National and the National Mentoring Partnership is clear: consistent, caring relationships with adults are the single most powerful intervention available for at-risk youth. The numbers tell the story:

• Youth with consistent mentors are 55% more likely to stay in school and avoid high-risk behavior

• Mentored youth are 46% less likely to start using illegal drugs

• Mentored youth are 52% less likely to skip school

• Youth with mentors are 130% more likely to hold a leadership role in their professional lives

• Youth introduced to skilled trades before age 18 are 3 times more likely to pursue those careers

• Mentorship Built Into Every Event — Working professionals from skilled trades and manufacturing pair directly with youth. Fishing is the setting; mentorship is the point.

• Programming During Peak Risk Hours — Full-day outdoor events keep youth safe and engaged during the 3–6 PM window when juvenile crime risk is highest. Structured after-school programs reduce that risk by up to 33%.

• Skilled Trades Exposure — Youth meet working tradespeople face to face, building the relationships and awareness that classrooms cannot replicate. Michigan's trades crisis is Detroit youth's economic opportunity.
